Caring for Horses in the Snow: Keeping Them Happy, Healthy, and Comfortable All Winter Long

Winter can be a magical time at the barn—quiet mornings, snowy paddocks, and horses wearing their fluffiest coats. But snow and cold weather also bring special responsibilities. Proper winter care is essential to keep horses healthy, comfortable, and thriving through the coldest months.

Hydration Is Critical

One of the biggest winter challenges is making sure horses drink enough water. Cold temperatures can reduce a horse’s desire to drink, increasing the risk of dehydration and colic. Fresh, unfrozen water should always be available. Heated water buckets or tank heaters are invaluable during snowy weather, and many horses drink more when water is kept slightly warm.

Adjust Nutrition for Cold Weather

Horses burn more calories in winter to maintain body heat. High-quality forage is especially important, as digesting hay helps generate internal warmth. Most horses benefit from increased hay intake during cold snaps. Monitor body condition closely and adjust feed as needed, especially for seniors, hard keepers, or working horses.

Shelter and Blanketing

Horses are remarkably hardy, but they still need protection from wind, freezing rain, and heavy snow. A well-constructed run-in shed or barn allows horses to escape harsh conditions. Blanketing depends on the individual horse—age, health, coat thickness, and workload all matter. A wet or wind-blown horse may need a properly fitted winter blanket to stay comfortable.

Hoof Care in Snow and Ice

Snow can pack into hooves, creating dangerous “snowballs” that increase the risk of slipping. Regular hoof cleaning is essential. Your farrier may recommend pads or special treatments to help prevent buildup. Icy conditions also mean extra caution when leading or turning horses out.

Turnout and Movement

Even in snowy weather, turnout and light exercise are important for circulation, digestion, and mental well-being. Clear icy paths, check footing carefully, and allow horses time to move safely. A little fresh air goes a long way during winter months.

Daily Checks Matter More Than Ever

Winter conditions can change quickly. Check horses daily for signs of weight loss, chills, skin issues, or minor injuries hidden under thick coats. Catching problems early makes all the difference.

With thoughtful care and attention, winter can be a peaceful and healthy season for horses. Snowy days may require extra effort, but they also offer quiet moments that remind us why caring for horses—no matter the weather—is always worth it. ❄️🐴
